Warriors Go Green For World Mental Health Day
Wednesday 10th October is World Mental Health Day in the UK, and the Warriors have taken a small step in doing their part for the promotion of mental health awareness by wearing green for their training session today, while also collecting donations for MIND Sheffield.
All at the Warriors believe that it is important to combat the stigma around metal health, and let people know the its OK not the be OK. And no more so than Head Coach Tom Kharchi.
On the importance of mental health awareness, Coach Kharchi had this to say: "On this day I wanted to highlight the importance of mental health on and off the field. We should take time to ask some of the important questions, such as "how are you?", "how are you doing?", "are you okay?".
When asked about how he feels mental health is important to the team and the sport, he said: "Sport is one of the highest pressure environments we freely put ourselves into. With high expectations to perform and succeed. The team environment may seem scary and may seem overwhelming. Yet it also allows for a great support system and an environment where, if we try, we can help one another. Not just to be a better player but to be in a better place mentally".
Coach Kharchi is a strong believer in the importance of his role in mental health support: "As a coach I get the incredible opportunity to interact and engage with 60+ athletes on a weekly basis. To me it's important not only to ensure we (the coaches) are doing the correct things on the field, but that the players are also well in themselves. This is one of the lesser known benefits of coaching and why I love doing what I do".
Coach Kharchi then summed up his feelings on the subject with a piece of advice he likes to give to all his players, friends and family alike: "Today, take a second to stop, think, talk to a friend and ask "how are you?".
Mental health affects us all in some way, so it is important that we not only look after ourselves, but also those around us. And remember, it's OK not to be OK.
