30 days and some very questionable displays of facial hair later, the Sheffield Hallam Warriors have raised a fantastic £540 for the Movember foundation.
The initiative was spearheaded for the Warriors by vice-chairman Mitch Leggett, whose own personal experiences motivated him to give back to those who have served his family so well over the years: “This is a subject that is incredibly close to home for me and my family. With my Mum having breast cancer and also myself having cancer at a young age. Seeing not only the amazing work all the doctors and nurses did for my family when we needed them but the way that my friends and family pulled together to provide the best support network you could wish for [really helped me through it]”.
Members of the Hallam side took part in the month of moustache growth throughout November and have been campaigning on social media to not only raise money for the charity, but also to increase awareness for the issues the Movember foundation fights against; testicular and prostate cancers, mental health awareness and suicide prevention.

Whilst the initial focus of the Movember fund was aimed at tackling the issue of cancer head on, over the years it has also become a fundraising platform for mental health and suicide awareness, especially in those cases linked with cancer. And this aspect of the effects of cancer was particularly prominent for Mitch: “Speaking out about mental health or telling someone you’re not okay was the hardest thing for me. Yes, my cancer was cured and you look like a normal healthy guy but mentally processing life and what was happening was getting the better of me”.
Mitch was delighted with the total raised by himself along with the rest of the Warriors, even singling out a couple of individuals on the team for their particularly impressive upper lip efforts: “I think we smashed it. We reached our target and raised awareness.
“A shout to [Dan] Procter for his moustache and Mik [Griffiths] for his too!”
With a strong start to the season on the pitch, it seems that good karma may well be smiling down on the Warriors after such an impressive charitable drive.
